Barb Brown Memorial Scholarship
The purpose and intent of the Barb Brown Memorial Scholarship is to enrich the educational opportunities for SIU and promote the principle that public higher education shares a responsibility to encourage public service and serve the public good by addressing the challenges which confront our communities.
About Barb Brown
After graduating from Southern Illinois University, Barb Brown taught in the department of political science and taught American government and democracy classes to international students through a summer program funded by the U.S. State Department. She later served as Clerk of the Courts in Randolph County, Illinois.
She was a co-founder of the Illinois Women’s Institute for Leadership, vice-chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois, co-founder of Southwestern Illinois Democratic Women, founder of Southern Illinois Democratic Women, and former chairwoman of the Randolph County Democratic Central Committee. She attended and was a nine-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention, a two-time candidate for Illinois' 58th State Senate District, and served notable roles in the campaigns of President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama.
Proceeds from the fund will be used to continue Dr. Brown's service and teaching legacy. The Barb Brown Memorial Endowment was established by many donors through the Institute to honor the life and legacy of Barbara L. Brown, Ph.D.
Eligibility
A scholarship may be provided to a continuing or incoming SIU student that articulates or demonstrates an interest in using their education in furtherance of public service or the public good as determined by those making the selection.
Preference will be given to a student with a high school diploma from an accredited school in the following Illinois counties: Alexander, Bond, Calhoun, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Crawford, Cumberland, Edwards, Effingham, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Jersey, Johnson, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Massac, Monroe, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saint Clair, Saline, Union, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, White, and Williamson.
Preference may also be given to a female student demonstrating financial need with a diploma from a southern Illinois high school. Previous recipients are eligible to receive the scholarship more than once.

To apply, you must complete the application via Saluki Scholarship Portal.
The deadline is February 1st.
