Women in Public Policy and Civic Engagement

Women in Public Policy and Civic Engagement is a registered student organization at Southern Illinois University Carbondale supported by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. The organization empowers women and students of all majors to explore public policy, government, politics, civic engagement, and public service.

Whether you are studying political science, communications, business, education, the arts, or any other field, all majors are welcome.

What Does Women in Public Policy and Civic Engagement Do?

The organization provides students with opportunities to learn, connect, and gain hands-on experience in civic and public life. Activities and programming may include:

• Guest speakers and conversations with community leaders, elected officials, and public policy professionals
• Professional networking opportunities with women working in government, politics, public policy, and civic organizations
• Student luncheons and discussions focused on current issues and public policy
• Resource fairs and educational programs connecting students with opportunities on and off campus
• Hands-on civic engagement, including constituent casework and community service
• Research and outreach projects supported by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute
• Opportunities to develop leadership and professional skills

The organization is designed to help students build confidence, expand their professional networks, and become more active participants in their communities.

A Growing Student Organization

The student-led organization was established with the support of Dr. Linda Baker, its advisor, and will be co-advised by Celia M. Howard Fellow Journey Short.

As Women in Public Policy and Civic Engagement continues to grow, members can look forward to a variety of opportunities, including guest speakers, professional development, civic engagement projects, community service, and meaningful conversations about the issues shaping Illinois and the nation.
